“Hi, I’m Dr. Alex Mirakian and I’m a radiation oncologist here at Southern Cancer Center.
People may not realize where I’m from. Some people say Britain, South Africa, but I eventually tell them I’m from Australia and almost universally I get that Australia is on their bucket list of places to visit. I’m a bit of an adventure buff, I love to travel. I’ve done some crazy things in my life like bungee jumping, sky diving. The craziest thing that I’ve ever done is actually run with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. I think that generated a lot of adrenaline at the time, but that was a lot of fun, a very unique experience.
I like to be outdoors and that’s what attracted me to this part of the country. Great climate, lots of great golf courses, I enjoy doing that, tennis as well. Going out for a run, riding my bike, just keeping fit generally. Also a little partial to good food. I’ve come across some great Southern fried cooking already. It’s a bit delicious, so I’ll have to watch my waistline a little bit, I think.
The role of a radiation oncologist in treating cancer involves collaborating with the other branches of oncology – surgical oncology and also medical oncology. Radiation makes up a third branch and together, ideally, we would discuss a patient’s case and come up with a treatment plan for that patient. I try to explain to patients it’s kind of like doing surgery, but instead of cutting the cancer out we basically damage the cancer with x-ray treatment. So it kind of has the same effect as removing the tumor with surgery, but it avoids the operation obviously. I try to leave them with hope and a good, clear understanding of their disease, and making them feel relaxed and confident about the quality of the treatment they are getting and the care that they are going to get from me.”
