Southern Cancer Center is pleased to welcome medical oncologist, Dr. Brittany Case, to our practice beginning August 2021. Dr. Case is a knowledgeable and incredibly compassionate physician, who is well-trained in all aspects of cancer therapy. We are proud to have the only female medical oncologist in Baldwin County. This is quite overdue, and we are thrilled that patients will now have choices that have not been available to them in the past.
Q&A with Dr. Case
Why did you choose to work in healthcare?
“I’ve known I wanted to be a physician since high school, but I had always been interested in primary care. I’m from small-town Alabama and that’s what I knew of doctors growing up. It wasn’t until my second year of residency at the University of South Alabama that I fell in love with oncology. The science and pathophysiology of cancer and its treatment are so interesting and unique. The field is growing rapidly with more targeted therapies continually being discovered. However, the patients are truly what drew me in, building relationships with them and their families during a vulnerable time. It is such a privilege.”
What are you most proud of as a leader and why?
“Being a great leader means showing humility and respect. Growing up, respect for others was something always instilled in me. As a leader in healthcare, one of the most important things you can do is show respect for everyone on the treatment team. The input of the patient and their family, the nurses, pharmacists and support staff are all invaluable. I hope that people view me as a team player and know that I will consistently put my patient’s best interest first.”
What is your mission?
“I hate cancer. We have all been affected by it in some capacity. It knows no boundaries and doesn’t care about the plans you have for your life. It’s not lost on me how much trust a person puts in their oncology team. It’s personal. I want to be an advocate and the one people turn to for help in their fight.”
What do you enjoy in your free time?
“I’m so fortunate to enjoy the best titles of mom and wife. I have two little girls, so spending time with them, my husband and our two dogs at the end of the day helps me to unwind. We love to take walks around the neighborhood and chat about our day. I usually try to grab a few minutes to myself a few days a week to work out. This helps me physically and mentally more than I could ever explain. I also enjoy traveling to new places, cooking for my family and friends, and entertaining.”
